You Don't Have to Believe Everything You Think

Updated: Mar 21

Ever feel trapped in your thoughts? I get it. With everything going on in my life lately, unwelcome thoughts have been playing on repeat. Unfortunately, rumination affects more than just your mind—it can cause muscle tension, disrupt sleep, and spike stress hormones. But I've found a few ways to break free:

First, when my thoughts are on a loop, I change my surroundings. A quick walk, stretching, or even switching tasks can shake things up.

Next, I use the Catch, Challenge, Change technique:

  1. Catch: Identify the repetitive thoughts playing in your mind.

  2. Challenge: Question their accuracy-ask yourself, "Where's the proof?" or "Is this helpful?" You can also ask, "What's another way to look at this?" It's surprising how often a more balanced perspective emerges.

  3. Change: Reframe the thought with an alternative, more truthful perspective that empowers you.

Prioritizing self-care routines also has a profound effect on the type of thoughts floating in and out of my brain. Incorporating the following into your daily routines can be a game-changer for you too.

Practice Mindfulness: Ground yourself in the present moment with deep breathing or guided meditation.

Journal Your Thoughts: Writing can help process emotions and bring clarity.

Move Your Body: A walk outside or light exercise can shift your perspective.

Talk it Out: Share your thoughts with someone you trust. Connection is powerful.

Prioritize Rest: A well-rested mind is more resilient to negative thought patterns.

I’m not my thoughts - I’m the thinker. And that means I get to decide what’s worth my energy. You can too.

Take care and be well,

Mysti
